Selection Process
Hatchet Force Recruitment, Selection and Training process
The Hatchet Force Recruitment, Selection and Training process is a biennial event consisting of 5 phases; A recruitment phase, and a 4-phased qualification course. This system is designed to recruit, gear up, assess, and select new members into the group. The first of these phases is a “zero phase”.
Phase Zero: Recruiting, Reception & Readiness.
This is an ‘open enrollment’ phase, when we take applications for people who want to join the team. During this phase, new applicants will be invited to training demonstrations. You will be able to see a little bit about how Hatchet Force operates as a group and what is expected of it’s members. This is where you decide if you want to become a part of the team. Should you decide to join, you will be expected to meet our equipment S.O.P. and other member requirements. You may receive preparedness training for HFQC (see below).
PHASE I – IV: HATCHET FORCE QUALIFICATION COURSE (HFQC)
This course is broken into 4 phases, and takes around 9 months to complete, with exercises 1 weekend out of every month. The course begins in the fall of every other year, and ends in the spring of the following year. Once the course has begun, Hatchet Force will no longer accept new applications until the course is complete. There are two ways to fail the course. Voluntary Withdrawal (VW), and Involuntary Withdrawal (IW). In either case you may be designated Not-to-Return (NTR). In some case, you may be invited to “recycle” and allowed to try again in a future evolution of the course.
PHASE I: Hatchet Force Assessment and Selection (HFAS)
This phase assesses the your ability to be considered for the remainder of the Q course. You will be tested on the following 12 “Whole Man” attributes:
- intelligence
- physical fitness
- motivation
- trustworthiness
- accountability
- maturity
- stability
- judgment
- decisiveness
- teamwork
- influence
- communications
This phase may include the following:
- Hand-and-arm Signals
- Formations & Patrol movement
- Land Navigation
The last event in HFAS will be a Land Navigation course. At the end of HFAS, we will decide if you will advance to Phase 2. If you complete this phase successfully, you will be referred to as a “probie” and will be allowed to wear the Hatchet Force Arrowhead patch.
PHASE II: Advanced Specialty Training
This phase is designed to cover some more advanced skills used on the team.
This Phase may include the following:
- Radio Communications
- Special Reconnaissance
- Hide Sites
- SALUTE reports
- SITREP/SPOTREP
- Ropes Course (Rappel/Knots/Acend/Swiss Seat/etc.)
- ORP Security / Scroll the Road / Advanced Bounding Overwatch (talking guns)
- Emergency Medical
PHASE III: Small Unit Tactics & SERE
This phase is designed to dive even further into the specialized training required of Hatchet Force members, with emphasis on unit cohesion and leadership, and including SERE (Survival, Resistance, Evasion & Escape).
This phase may include the following:
- Rest Over Night (RON)
- Long Range Patrol
- Survival
- Evasion & Escape
- Urban Operations
- Live Fire (real steel)
The last event of this phase will be an overnight SERE course designed to teach you the how to survive on your own against an overwhelming enemy force. You will learn when it is better to escape & survive than to attack.
PHASE IV: FALCON SOUND & Graduation
This phase will be the final test that will culminate in the graduation of a Hatchet Force member. FALCON SOUND will be a special kind of team-only challenge. You will be tasked with objectives and have to complete them against an OPFOR consisting of tabbed HF members. It will be a 3 or 4 night event that will test the you on everything you have learned throughout the Q-Course. It will be extremely challenging and include up to 25 miles of land-navigation.
If you pass this event, you will receive a special certification of completion of FALCON SOUND & the Hatchet Force Qualification Course (HFQC). Completing HFQC does not, however entitle you to a Hatchet Force Tab. You will get that only when the tabbed members feel you are ready and make a unanimous decision.
How to participate
If you want to be a member of Hatchet Force and feel you have what it takes to complete the Q Course, go ahead and sign up during the “zero phase”. If you are a member of another organization or team, but you want to go through the Q Course anyway, feel free to contact us, we will evaluate your request on a case-by-case basis.
